Overview:
In this experiment, the students will learn how to make the eggs float by using household materials.
Time:
3-8 min
Lesson Materials:

Learning Objectives:
- Create an experiment with two different results (Floating and Sinking).
- Analyze the difference of the experiment
- Identify what caused the eggs to float and sink
Materials Needed:
- 2 Eggs
- 1 Water Bottle
- Small table
- 2 Clear glass
- 1 Table Salt
- Tray or Paper Towels
- ¼ Measuring Cup
- Paper
- Spoon
- Pen or Pencil
- First-aid kit (optional)
- Safety goggles (optional)
Experimental Methods:
Questions for the students before the Floating Eggs experiment
- Before the experiment, ask the students which one is going to float and sink.
- Ask the students to create a hypothesis and prediction.
- Conduct the test
Steps for the Floating Eggs experiment
- Place the tray or paper towels on the small table.
- Place the 2 clear glass on the tray.
- Label the glasses with #1 and #2 using a paper and pen.
- Using the water bottles, fill the clear glasses with ¾ full of water
- On one of the cups add two ¼ cups of salt and stir with a spoon for 30 seconds.
- Gently place the one egg each on the clear glass
- Observe the experiment.
- Ask the students about their prediction
- Explain the conclusion of the experiment
Questions to Think About:
- Which glass has the floating egg?
- Which glass has the sinking egg?
- Why did the egg float?
- Why did the egg sink?
- Can we use other items than salt?
- Would the egg float if we use another item or would it sink?
- If you go swimming in the ocean, is it easy for a human to float or sink?
Chemistry:
This experiment compares two solutions. One glass only contains water, and the other glass has water with salt. As you add more salt, the density of the egg is gradually decreasing compared to the water. On the other hand, the egg sank on the other glass because the egg is denser than the water solution, and there were no other ingredients added to the water to change the outcome.
Society:
Understanding how density works is very important to society. Society uses the knowledge of density to make large boats float in the middle of the ocean or make balloons float in the air. Imagine if density was not discovered. We wouldn’t be able to travel in the ocean and see all the aquatic animals.
Logistics:
STEAM Subjects:
Science
Science Vocabulary:
Density, concentration, solution, sink, and float
