Overview:
Students will discuss and learn about how water travels through plants by a process called osmosis. Students will explore how osmosis works by creating paper flowers that will bloom when placed in water.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn about osmosis.
- Identify how water sticks together.
- Create paper flowers that can bloom in the water.
- Test different types of paper.
- Observe their flowers in the water.
- Make connections from the experiment to real-life applications, such as water moving through plants.
Alignment with NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards)
| K-LS1-1. | Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive. |
| K-2-ETS1-2. | Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem. |
| K-2-ETS1-3. | Analyze data from tests of two objects designed to solve the same problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each performs. |
Materials Needed:
- PaperĀ
- Use at least 2 different types, such as notebook paper and printing paper
- Color pen or pencil (any type)
